Runway Training.

I've been messing around with Runway for a while and the long anticipated training feature is rolling out!

We've seen all kinds of machine learning magic on the internet, but so far it's been relatively inaccessible unless you want to spend hours swimming through code. Runway has already made the huge step of porting 40+ machine learning models into an accessible UI for anyone to explore.

And now ML training is rolling out. That means you can now train models with your own dataset using their UI (no coding necessary). Right now Runway is setup for StyleGAN (with other models in the pipeline). With StyleGAN training, you can upload your own set of images to train it to generate new images.

Here's an example trained on 1000+ xray images.

And another trained on flags. I really like how this one reveals what StyleGAN is doing in the background. It looks like it thinks with brushstrokes.

Paint.

Painting is something I've been wanting to incorporate into my creative practice for a while.

I come to painting seeing it very much as a technological medium, in the same way I see working with electronics, or writing code. And I approach it with an interest in what it feels like to use a new and unfamiliar medium for expression.

I consider paint, similar to electronics or software, hard, non-human, and involves modifying ourselves through learning, practice and accommodating constraints. A process which is not always intuitive or universally accessible.

Our good old friend Rob Goddshaw recently launched a kickstarter campaign that brings awareness to the importance of making restrooms safe and accessible for everyone.

Robb is a prolific maker + social activist. His campaign has some clever rewards (it is entirely NOT FOR PROFIT!) and you should totally support him, but just as important give it a thorough read through because it will really change your perspective on bathroom design.
