This is our ongoing catalog of stuff that inspires us. These are references we've been collecting over the years. We were just reminded we made this thing, so we wanted to share it.

Speaking of art.

I took a day off yesterday and went for the first time since the renovation to MoMA (it's probably been 3-4 years!!!). Shuffling through the massive labyrinth of their permanent collection, I saw this 1960 painting by François Morellet titled Random Distribution of 40,000 Squares Using the Odd and Even Numbers of a Telephone Directory, 50% Blue, 50% Red. Morellet made this painting by having his family read him numbers from the telephone book, and marked odd/even numbers as red/blue.
Seeing this today we can easily identify this as a 50/50 random distribution, and if not that, we've definitely seen stuff that looks like it. But back then, this surface must have looked incredibly strange and unfamiliar. I can't stop thinking about how weird this must have been to people. But maybe not, maybe there were other examples of this pre-1960? Anyone know?
