Smiles.Â
Thank you all for the kind words and cheers this week. We're back at work and still smiling.
When we started our Discord, we were thinking it'll be a nice way to share some behind-the-scenes documentation. We do some of the, but the coolest part is seeing the stuff you all are doing and joining conversations around your interests.
We've got a new channel called "our ones" where people can share their favorite of a particular item. (We totally just ordered pocari sweat for post-run hydration).Â
Also on there is a Solid State Watch channel where @willy has been sharing their process experimenting with making custom Solid State Watch's. It's so awesome to see the process.
Cardboard cuteness.Â
Last night we went to see our good friend Kacie's Tweenbots on view at a new MoMA show titled Never Alone. Kacie's cardboard robot moves in a straight line and gets unsolicited help from strangers to reach its destination. It was her 2009 thesis work at ITP and it is so wonderful to see it celebrated again after all these years alongside other projects like the original Apple Macintosh, the @ symbol, minecraft...
I particularly liked seeing Susan Kare's Graphic icon sketches (1982-1983). This works makes visible the translation between real world space into how a computer represents images with individual pixels. All of these pictographic icons were originally drawn on graph paper. A quick dive into Kare's practice is totally worthwhile...I just did it.Â
We also got to see Wolfgang Tillmans's new show To Look Without Fear. This exhibit really took my breath away. The first word that comes to mind is generous. I felt a closeness, and intimacy to the work that you would usually feel on a studio visit. It also feels really unpretentious, most of the work is unframed and hung with scotch tape. The way it is hung also makes really good use of the gallery. Walking through feels like discovery, shifting from massive wall-sized to 8x10 prints. I was surprised at how much I wanted to spent time with.
With love and hugs,
