Easier said.

It's the same with this as it is for other things that pop up in life that are uncomfortable, or scary, but are also completely out of our control. My tendency is to hop on the worry train. Che-Wei silos inwards staying focused on what he does best and can control.

Conversations about tariffs started around last summer. Every so often it would pop into my head, and I'd bring it up. Is this something we should be worrying about? Che-Wei wouldn't want to talk about it.

Over the years I've learned that Che-Wei has a hard line about refusing to indulge in conversations about things to worry about but can't control. It took me a long time (and many prickly situations) to understand what he was avoiding. The gist of it was actually a misunderstanding. I think he thought that me asking to talk about worries was also me asking him to worry with me. Which actually wasn't at all what I wanted.

Che-Wei was right. If I am honest, even if we did spend time indulging tariff worries, scenario planning, or optimizing, or whatever you're supposed to do, it would have done nothing. Plus, it's not what we do. It's not our work.

When it's worry time in our house we have a script. I say, I'm going to share a worry with you. And then CW listens and says, I acknowledge your worry and understand how it is making you feel. And then we go to sleep and wake up and get back to work.

We don't know what is going to happen today any more than we did yesterday, or last year, or 10 years ago. It's what we signed up for doing this type of work. And it's also life. Sure, we can get angry and alarmist and spend a bunch of time indulging in or making predictions. But we can't let that take the place of the work.
