I can't get a sentence out of my head.

At first it was just the sound of it. A short sequence of 5 words, with a comma. Its simplicity, its cadence. When I came across it, I didn't have anything to mark it, so I dug my fingernail into the page, creating a long indentation beneath the words.

It's been several weeks since I came across it, making my way through Virginia Woolf's The Waves. Since, and out of nowhere, it keeps popping into my head. I started reading The Waves when my piano teacher suggested it. At first I was unsure. I knew nothing going in, except that it had something to do with children. At first I found myself wondering, searching, what is this? And it was only after relinquishing the tendency to make sense of a thing by relating it to something known, and simply for what it is, that I began to appreciate.

I never read Woolf in school. Reading her now is a gift. The book in many ways centers around this beautiful premise, that every character, no matter their age or condition, has a poetic inner voice. And these voices, are not in service of building unique or distinct characters, or opposition, or conflict. But instead their weaving serves to build something greater, fluid, indistinct. A miracle whose whole somehow suggests some things about being human in the world.

There are so many good sentences in this book.

"Are we not acceptable, moon?"

Is one that keeps me in awe.
