Volume.
June was turbulent. Due to a family emergency, we ended up canceling our SFPC electronic workshop. All is ok now.
At the end of the month we went on a family trek through a part of the Julian Alps. We walked all day, slept in mountain huts, once sardined into in a room of 12, ate big bowls of soupy sauerkraut and beans. The air, the quiet, the effort each day was energizing.
I usually spend most of my time perched and crowded onto the bedrock that is NYC. It makes the world feel small. The sheer mass, volume of the mountains on our hike made me think about how big earth is, and how it's impossibly hard to get a sense of its bigness.
We're spending the rest of July in Berlin. A city none of us have been to, but in our short time here, at least for me, ranks really high, maybe #1 on my favorite cities. It was grey and rainy for 2 days when we arrived. We spent mornings at home, afternoons wandering. I found a spot north of us in Prenzlauer in an old industrial building where I can rent time on a piano for €6.50/hour. We also went bouldering at a local gym. Usually when you're signing up for stuff like that and filling out forms, the process feels frenetic. I kept apologizing to the guy at the counter, because I thought I had to hurry and he kept calmly assuring me to take my time.
Today we're in Karlsruhe. Che-Wei is giving a workshop at ZKM for their mars series on latency and communication. Last night we found a small Turkish restaurant that served home cooked style food. Our kids asked what home cooked food means. Isn't all food just cooked in a kitchen? Why is there a difference. Our answer was that it just isn't trying to be fancy, it's practical and nourishing. They said it was the best chickpeas and rice they've ever had. After a serving of seconds, Pau asked for a container to scrounge the last bits on his plate to eat for breakfast. The owner filled the extra space with extra.
If anyone knows of any places to check out in Berlin, or people or studios to visit, please let us know. We'd love to hang.
Some fuzzy mountain flowers.
If we're slower than usual on some things it is because we are away. Colin + Jessie + Kristen are holding it down in NYC.
Thanks for all the Little Scissor love. When we launched this a few weeks ago, it was the biggest day of sales we've ever had, which isn't a metric we usually pay attention to, but really means a lot to us.
With love and hugs,
Che-Wei + Taylor
